Techniques & Programs
|
Therapeutic exercises utilize individualized programs designed with specific goals for each patient. The physical therapist will work one-on-one with the patient to teach these specific exercises and activities to reach the goals of the rehabilitative program including improved range of motion, increased strength, normalization of gait and posture, and increase in endurance for return to routine, work and recreational activities. The exercises may include strength training both active and resistive, aerobic conditioning, stretching, and mechanics training.

Joint mobilization, similar to, but less forceful than manipulation is a hands on technique performed by a physical therapist to increase joint range of motion and decrease painful movement of the joint. During this technique the patient's joint surfaces are passively glided across each other in an attempt to increase movement of the joint. Gentle joint traction may also be used during this technique to aid in increasing mobility and stretching of the joint capsule. There are various grades and types of mobilizations that are used to treat many different joints in the body including the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, pelvis, knee and foot.

Muscle Energy involves the patient actively using his or her muscles from a controlled position in a specific direction against counterforce applied by the physical therapist. Goals of this treatment are to assist in normalizing joint position and function.

This unique treatment approach used by our trained physical therapists addresses the underlying mechanical influences of the body that may lead to pain and dysfunction. Posture and proper respiration are focuses with this manual therapy treatment. Patients experiencing pain at the knee, hip, groin, SI joint, back, shoulders, between the shoulder blades, neck and TMJ are treated with this technique.

Strain/Counter-Strain is a manual therapy technique used to relieve pain and restore function. The objective is to maximize relaxation of the body part involved, thereby normalizing neuromuscular reflexes.

Massage and soft tissue mobilization are hands on techniques used by physical therapists to increase blood flow, decrease pain and muscle spasm, and to increase soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) mobility. Techniques used include myofascial stretching, deep friction massage, and trigger point release. Trigger points are hyperirritable taut bands of tissue.

Mechanical traction is a gentle, and controlled stretching of the cervical and lumbar spine. This distraction force, commonly used in treating spinal disk problems, helps to decompress the spine and assist in pain reduction and spinal mobility.

Iontophoresis is a process that uses electrical current to transmit medication through the skin, into inflammed tissue. It is often used in treating tendonitis.

Electrical stimulation is used in physical therapy treatment programs for different reasons such as pain relief and muscle re-education. Different frequencies and current types have different effects on the tissue.

Phonophoresis is the application and delivery of medication through the use of sound waves (ultrasound). A cream or gel preparation (usually a high concentration cortisone preparation) is applied to the skin and then ultrasound is utilized to drive the medication through the skin to the structures below. This process helps reduce inflammation.

This modality works by the use of inaudible sound waves that are transmitted into the soft tissue. The physiological high frequency effects of ultrasound include increased blood flow and cellular activity to help speed up the healing process of many common injuries.

This is commonly used before and/or after therapy treatments to enhance the effectiveness of the other procedures. The superficial heat provided by hot packs is used to increase blood flow, decrease pain and stiffness and to promote muscle relaxation. Cold packs are applied to specific body areas to decrease pain, spasm, and swelling (inflammation).

ASTYM - Watch a short video of the ASTYM process
Most treatments ignore soft-tissue dysfunctions such as adhesions, scar tissue and inappropriate fibrosis. ASTYM treatment directly addresses unhealthy soft tissue through an innovative treatment process that years of scientific research and clinical trails have demonstrated to be effective.
A certified clinician, following a specific protocol, non-invasively locates and treats the dysfunctional tissue using specially designed, patented instrumentation. This approach induces the patient's body to respond by initiating the healing cascade. This includes macrophage mediated phagocytosis (microdebridement) and local release of growth factors that result in an increase in fibroblast recruitment and activation. A customized stretching and exercise program is prescribed to promote optimal tissue healing and collagen remodeling.
Throughout the treatment, patients are encouraged to stay active in their work, sport or daily activities. This is important, as it facilitates stronger and more functional tissue and decreases the risk of re-injury. |

"At Arizona Multisports Physical Therapy, I felt like I got really good guidance, a good review when I visited the office, a good set of exercises to do on my own for my shoulder and the progress seemed to be measured more closely and more accurately than in another experience I'd had with physical therapy. My therapist really took an interest in my activity and spoke the language of my sport and it seemed that she could lend that knowledge to the healing process."

"I've had 4 operations on the same knee which can be a very trying, or negative experience in trying to rehab. The people at Arizona Multisports Physical Therapy made it a very positive experience in that they put together a very clear, concise schedule and then held me to that schedule and accomplished everything that we set out to do. It was because of their diligence and their patience with me, and the fact that they knew exactly what there were doing, that made it a very positive experience for me."
